One of the biggest obstacles to owning a golf simulator is having the space for it. Whether the issue is a low ceiling, narrow room width, shallow room depth, or any combination of these, many simulator setups may be impossible to achieve depending on your unique situation.

Fortunately, whatever the size of your space, there are plenty of compact simulator solutions out there that can accommodate a wide range of budgets.

In the case of a golf simulator for small spaces, there are a few things you’ll need to give yourself the best experience: a launch monitor that records your shot data, a hitting net, and optionally, a projector for displaying your shots on a life-size impact screen.

In this article, we’ll review and compare our picks for the best golf simulators for small spaces. For the purposes of this article, we’ll assume a “small space” means no more than 9 ft of ceiling height, 14 feet of width, and 18 feet of depth, but you can consider the options that work for your space.

Note: Golfstead has tested and/or conducted in-depth research into all of the products featured in this guide. Our editorial process for these rankings takes into account a mix of many factors which may include performance, reliability, usability, value for money, cost, and the general consensus from other users of the product. 1. SkyTrak MAX SIG8 Golf Simulator Package

SkyTrak ST MAX SIG8 Golf Simulator Package

This simulator package pairs the powerful SkyTrak ST MAX launch monitor with The Indoor Golf Shop’s compact SIG8 enclosure. At just 8’4″ high x 8’4″ wide, the enclosure should be able to fit in most small spaces.

What’s more, because the ST MAX sits in front of the golfer on the hitting mat, much less depth is needed; as long as you have enough room to swing your longest club unimpeded, you’re good to go.

This simulator package offers an excellent balance between affordability, quality and performance. It’s ideal for those who want to spend four figures or less and who want great value for money.

What Is Included

The SkyTrak MAX SIG8 package consists of the ST MAX launch monitor and a high-quality SIG8 simulator screen and enclosure (designed by The Indoor Golf Shop) that is handcrafted in the USA.

The ST MAX is an upgraded version of the ST+, adding new speed training functionality, a new modular internal design, and an extra USB-C port.

Also included are:

  • your choice of a hitting mat (5’x5′ or 4’x7′)
  • impact screen (white or high-contrast gray)
  • golf simulator projector (optional)
  • landing pad turf

The package includes a subscription to the SkyTrak Essential Plan which gives you access to all available training and feedback tools as well as an enhanced driving range. You can optionally upgrade to the Core or Elite plan and gain access to Course Play powered by Trackman or Foresight Sports.

The projector options may change based on current supply and other factors. However, they are guaranteed to be minimum HD quality with enough lumens for a bright experience.

The choices for hitting mat are the Fairway Series 5’x5′ (provides realistic feel) and SIGPRO 4’x7′ (easy on the joints, allows level unit placement). You can also install SIG8 Simulator Flooring — a full flooring option that consists of a hitting strip surrounded by a putting green.

Although smaller spaces can work, room dimensions of 9 ft high x 10 ft wide x 16 ft deep are recommended. Get your driver out and make a backswing to ensure you have enough clearance.

We love this simulator package because the studio is well-made with great aesthetics, the cost is reasonable, and it’s relatively easy to set up. If you have at least 10’10” of width in your space, consider the larger SkyTrak MAX SIG10 instead.

2. Carl’s EYE MINI Golf Simulator Package

Carl's Place EYE MINI Simulator Package

You can think of the Uneekor EYE MINI as a portable EYE XO with an on-board display. It may not be quite as powerful as the EYE XO in terms of features and data points, but it’s considerably more affordable and its accuracy is pretty much just as good.

This package, put together by Carl’s Place, pairs the EYE MINI with Carl’s unique DIY Enclosure available in a range of different sizes. Depending on your space constraints, you can go as small as 7.7’x10’x5′ or 8’x8’x5′.

In spite of all you’re getting including a high-end launch monitor, swing cameras and a 4K UHD projector, this package remarkably manages to stay under $10,000 in cost. We recommend taking advantage while you still can.

What Is Included

The Carl’s EYE MINI simulator package includes:

  • a Uneekor EYE MINI launch monitor
  • a Carl’s DIY Enclosure with impact screen (six size options)
  • a Carl’s HotShot 4’x9′ hitting mat (double-sided)
  • a BenQ TK710STi 4K short throw projector
  • a projector ceiling mount
  • a Carl’s Swing Camera set with optional accessories
  • a golf simulator computer (optional)

The EYE MINI is a portable launch monitor that contains two high-speed infrared cameras and measures an array of ball and club data. It boasts Club Optix technology which allows you to view slow-motion closeups of the club impacting the ball.

The included HotShot Mat — soft, high-quality and durable — has a pre-cut replaceable hitting strip that can be swapped out once sufficiently worn. Carl’s Place sells these hitting strips separately for your convenience.

In conjunction with the Uneekor View software, you can use the swing cameras to analyze your swing from a multitude of different angles. The included BenQ projector can output at 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) resolution, but because it’s non-laser, it’s relatively affordable.

The third-party software compatible with the EYE MINI are E6 CONNECT, TGC 2019, and GSPro, although a paid Uneekor subscription is required to set this up. You can also use the launch monitor with Uneekor’s new GameDay software.

To install the setup, you’ll need enough space to fit the enclosure size you choose, mount the projector, and swing your longest club (driver) unimpeded.

This fantastic golf simulator package gives you portability, a wide range of data points, reliability, accuracy, and plenty of features for game improvement and entertainment. For full details on what’s included, go here.

3. Foresight Sports GC3S PlayBetter SimStudio Package

Foresight Sports GC3S PlayBetter SimStudio Package

The Foresight Sports GC3S allows you to experience the power of the Foresight Sports GC3 through a subscription model with a low entry cost.

Without a subscription, you’ll be able to view ball data parameters on the LCD display after each shot. You can then optionally sign up for a Gold Subscription which unlocks more functionality and allows you to use simulation software.

The GC3S is similar in many ways to the EYE MINI above. And with this affordable package put together by reputable golf vendor PlayBetter, you get a full-size (but still compact) enclosure and hitting mat so you can use the GC3S as part of a complete simulator studio.

The enclosure can be as small as just 7.5 ft tall x 8 ft wide x 4 ft deep. Combined with a launch monitor that sits directly in front of the hitting zone, you can make this setup work in some very small spaces.

What Is Included

The GC3S PlayBetter SimStudio Package comes with the Foresight Sports GC3S launch monitor, along with:

  • a PlayBetter SimStudio hitting bay (screen, enclosure, mat, side netting, landing turf)
  • an HD golf simulator projector (model may change)
  • a projector mount (floor or ceiling)
  • a protective metal case for the GC3S
  • a Bushnell Pro X3+LINK laser rangefinder

At the time of writing, there are four enclosure size options: the SimStudio8 (8’x7.5’x4′), SimStudio10 (10’x8.5’x5.25′), SimStudio12 (12’x8.5’x5.25′), and SimStudio13 Deep (13’x10’x10′). With the SimStudio8, the projector is mounted on the ground.

The GC3S comes with a one year of the Gold Subscription with the initial purchase. A Gold Subscription, which costs $499/yr, unlocks access to 25 courses, club data, sessions, clubs, the FSX software suite, and more.

With this system, you have access to six ball metrics, and the Gold Subscription adds four club metrics. Also included is the Bushnell Pro X3+LINK laser rangefinder which can integrate with the launch monitor data to provide real-time, personalized club recommendations and enhanced course management insights during real rounds out on the golf course.

Your space for this setup will need to fit the size of enclosure you choose, and you’ll need to be able to make a swing with your longest club.

This simulator package enjoys a high average rating of 4.9/5. You can think of the GC3S as a newer replacement for the Bushnell Launch Pro. For full details, check out this page.

4. Carl’s Ready-to-Golf ProTee VX Package

Carl's Ready-to-Golf ProTee VX Package

Interested in a fixed ceiling-mounted system instead of a ground-based launch monitor?

Then have a look at the ProTee VX. This launch monitor has an extensive set of data parameters, high-end accuracy, a large hitting area, a super easy setup, and is compatible with the best simulator software on the market. No marked balls or club stickers are needed to get any measurements.

And taking all of that into account, it’s less expensive than the comparable Uneekor EYE XO, which many would argue is just as good.

This package, put together by Carl’s Place, pairs the ProTee VX with Carl’s DIY enclosure. In addition to our view on the ProTee VX, Carl’s Place considers it one of the best systems for the money right now.

For this simulator, a ceiling height of 9 feet is recommended for mounting the launch monitor, but there are no space requirements behind the hitting zone. If the enclosure sizes on offer don’t work for you, we highly recommend ordering a custom enclosure through Carl’s BYOS tool to suit your small space needs.

What Is Included

The Carl’s Ready-to-Golf ProTee VX Package most notably includes:

  • a ProTee VX launch monitor
  • a Carl’s DIY Enclosure Kit with impact screen (three size options & two screen options)
  • a Carl’s HotShot 4’x9′ hitting mat (double-sided)
  • an HD projector (models may change)
  • a projector ceiling mount
  • a golf simulator computer (optional)

The ProTee VX uses Vision and A.I. technology as part of a dual high-speed camera setup. Data is measured and displayed within a second of hitting your shot thanks to A.I. and machine learning technology.

For data viewing and analysis, the ProTee VX launch monitor comes with the ProTee Labs software which, in addition to showing all your data in an easy-to-read format, provides a slow-motion replay of the club impacting the ball for every shot.

This simulator is also compatible with third-party software solutions TGC 2019, E6 CONNECT, GSPro, Creative Golf, and ProTee Play.

The DIY enclosure is unique compared to other enclosures because the impact screen sits flush with the floor, providing a seamless transition from turf to screen. You can optionally select a high-contrast gray impact screen that produces a better image indoors.

The included HotShot Mat — soft, high-quality and durable — has a pre-cut replaceable hitting strip that can be swapped out once sufficiently worn. Carl’s Place sells these hitting strips separately for your convenience.

The ProTee VX should be mounted about 3.5 feet (40-43 inches) in front of the hitting area and 9-10 feet above the ground. We really do believe it’s a game-changer in the launch monitor space. For full details on what’s included, go to this page.

5. FlightScope Mevo Gen2 Garage Golf Simulator Package

FlightScope Mevo Gen2 Garage Golf Simulator Package

Do you plan on housing your simulator in a garage, or would you like to be able to easily repurpose your space when the simulator isn’t in use? If so, check this out.

The FlightScope Mevo Gen2 Garage Simulator pairs the outstanding Mevo Gen2 launch monitor, the next generation of the Mevo+, with a state-of-the-art enclosure system that can be fully retracted at the click of a button and is designed to mount to your garage door tracks.

With this simulator setup, you can convert a small garage space (or any space with a wall mount kit) into a golf simulator room and benefit from accurate ball flight data for dialing in your game. The smallest screen size available is 7 ft wide.

What Is Included

The Mevo Gen2 Garage Golf Simulator Package comes with:

  • a Mevo Gen2 launch monitor (accessories and software included)
  • a G-TRAK Retractable Impact Screen
  • a short throw golf simulator projector
  • SIGPRO landing turf (6 ft x 10 ft)
  • a premium hitting mat (optional)

The Mevo Gen2 is a versatile consumer-tier launch monitor equipped with Doppler radar and Fusion Tracking technology. It measures 18 data points and comes with high-quality simulation courses out of the box.

The system can be used with the free FS Golf app or FS Golf for PC, giving you real-time performance data, saving of sessions, skills challenges, and more. Access to third-party solutions Creative Golf, Awesome Golf, GSPro, E6 CONNECT, and E6 APEX are also available, and eight E6 CONNECT courses are included with the device at no extra cost.

The G-TRAK screen connects to the tracks of your garage door with a patented bracket system. Various size options are available depending on the size of your garage door, but with a wall mount kit purchased separately, you can set up the G-TRAK in any non-garage space.

Multisport targets can also be used with the G-TRAK, and side and top netting create a shallow enclosure for catching shots. These net sections can be extended out after pressing a handset button to unroll the screen.

The included SIGPRO turf can be used as a hitting mat, but for an enhanced experience, you can optionally add a premium hitting mat and use the SIGPRO as landing pad turf.

This setup is easy to assemble, saves space, and can be unrolled and retracted with the push of a button on the included remote control. For more details about what comes with the simulator, how exactly to set it up, and more, visit this page.

6. Square Golf PlayBetter SimStudio Package

Square Golf PlayBetter SimStudio Simulator Package

The Square Golf launch monitor is a unique budget system. Unlike other budget launch monitors in its price range like the Approach R10 and MLM2PRO, it’s camera-based and sits in front of the golfer, which means extra depth behind the hitting area isn’t needed.

The system measures an array of ball and club parameters and is the only launch monitor in its price range to directly measure club path.

This all-inclusive simulator package by PlayBetter offers the Square with a blackout enclosure and screen, hitting mat, landing turf and projector. The SimStudio comes in a range of sizes, including ones designed for small spaces.

What Is Included

The Square Golf PlayBetter SimStudio Package includes:

  • a Square Golf launch monitor w/ swing stick, dotted balls, and remote control
  • a PlayBetter SimStudio full hitting (four size options)
  • an HD short throw projector with mount

The SimStudio consists of a noise-dampening impact screen, full enclosure with blackout walls, 5’x5′ hitting mat, side barrier netting, and landing pad turf that can double as a putting surface. We’re impressed with the quality of all of the components.

While the Square can be used with real clubs (we recommend this whenever possible), it comes with a swing stick which can optionally be used for quick, convenient practice sessions. Included marked balls and club tape allow the device to measure spin and club path, respectively.

The Square not only comes with comprehensive simulator software, course play (10+ courses), and putting support out of the box, but it can also integrate with E6 CONNECT, E6 APEX, GSPro, and Awesome Golf.

You can expect the projector included with this package to be minimum HD quality and put out enough lumens for a bright experience.

Your space for this setup will need to fit whatever size enclosure you choose. The SimStudio8, in particular, is fantastic for small spaces, but you may be able to upsize depending on what space you have to work with.

The Square is probably the best budget (sub-$1000) system that utilizes high-speed cameras. For full details about this sim package, go here.

7. Foresight Sports GCQuad SIG8 Golf Simulator Package

Foresight Sports GCQuad SIG8 Golf Simulator Package

The GCQuad can be considered the gold standard of camera-based portable launch monitors, used by top coaches and pro golfers such as Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy.

It uses a quadrascopic (four) camera system which captures thousands of images per second and builds a complete 3D model of the club and ball at impact, allowing for measurements that are direct and not calculated.

This package was put together by The Indoor Golf Shop and uses their compact SIG8 enclosure which is ideal for small spaces.

What Is Included

The GCQuad SIG8 Simulator package pairs the GCQuad Launch Monitor with:

  • a SIG8 golf simulator screen & enclosure
  • your choice of hitting mat (5’x5′, 4’x7′, or full flooring)
  • cables and a power adapter
  • alignment stick and other accessories
  • an HD golf simulator projector (optional)
  • FSX Play software

This simulator is compatible with the full Foresight Sports software suite including FSX ProFSX 2020 and FSX Play. It also can integrate with third-party solutions E6 CONNECTGSProAwesome Golf, and Creative Golf.

Direct-to-screen output means you can view your numbers without any separate device or software. The Clubhead Measurement add-on is included with the GCQuad, and you can optionally get the Essential Putting Analysis add-on at extra cost which gives you detailed insight into every aspect of your putting.

Room dimensions of 9 ft high x 10 ft wide x 16 ft deep are recommended.

The GCQuad is considered the “Rolls-Royce” of golf launch monitors along with the QuadMAX. If you have the budget to accommodate it in a simulator setup, you’ll be very happy.

8. SkyTrak Plus PlayBetter Net Return Package

SkyTrak Plus PlayBetter Net Return V2 Series Package

The original SkyTrak Plus (ST+), while lacking a few upgrades, is more affordable than the ST MAX, and this robust net setup also ups the affordability factor.

This is an affordable package (less than $5000) that was put together by PlayBetter. It pairs the SkyTrak Plus Launch Monitor with your choice of high-quality hitting net from The Net Return.

A small space that’s only 8’6″ high x 10′ wide x 12′ deep should be sufficient for this setup as long as you can swing your longest club freely.

What Is Included

The SkyTrak+ PlayBetter Net Return Package pairs the SkyTrak Plus (ST+) Launch Monitor with either The Net Return Home Series or Pro Series golf net.

Also included is a free trial of the SkyTrak Essential Plan, and optionally, the Net Return Pro Turf with side netting, sandbags, and rubber tees.

The ST+ measures various ball parameters including ball speed, launch angle, carry distance, spin, and descent angle. Club data includes clubhead speed, club path, face to path, and face to target. Advanced algorithms are used to calculate additional parameters within the SkyTrak software.

The Net Return’s hitting nets, usable indoors or outdoors, feature an instant ball return design, powder-coated, rust-resistant aluminum frame, quick-connect assembly, and UV-shielded netting. The Home Series model has a size of 7 ft x 7 ft, while the Pro Series is 8 ft wide by 7.5 ft tall.

The Pro Turf Mat is ten feet long and provides continuous ball return from the screen back to the hitting area. It doubles as a putting green and rolls up and stores like a carpet.

This lean sim package is very popular. We think it’s a great choice for golfers that want to stick their toe into the world of golf simulation but don’t want to go all out just yet.

Buying Guide

A golf simulator can be a huge investment. Because of this, it’s important to consider all the factors that will affect your experience and match it with what your goals are.

Here are the most important factors you need to consider when figuring out which golf simulator will best meet your needs:

1. Size

White Measuring Tape

Size is critical, especially when you have a small space that gives you little to no wiggle room in terms of how you go about setting up your simulator.

Generally speaking, the more expensive the simulator, the larger the footprint the studio will take up. A full screen, enclosure and turf will likely require the most space, while a practice net will require less space.

When determining if your space (home or commercial) is big enough for a particular simulator, the following conditions must be met:

  1. The enclosure/net and hitting mat need to fit in the space.
  2. The room needs enough depth to accommodate the mounting location for the projector.
  3. You need to be able to freely swing the longest club you plan to use.
  4. The launch monitor needs enough space (in front or behind) to operate properly.

Measure the width, length and height of your space and compare it to the minimum space requirements of every golf simulator you look at.

Practically all full golf simulator setups will require a bare minimum of eight feet of ceiling height. Width allowance is usually a minimum of ten feet, and depth allowance is usually a minimum of twelve feet, although launch monitors like the Mevo Gen2 and Approach R10 need more depth.

2. Portability

Figure pushing a cog

If you only have a small space for a golf simulator, you may want to use the space for something else from time to time. When it comes to repurposing your simulator room, you can either use a retractable screen or move the system entirely.

One of the best retractable simulator screens we would recommend is the HomeCourse ProScreen 180 which can be rolled up with the press of a button on a handset.

Aside from the screen, an important matter is the launch monitor. Ceiling-mounted launch monitors like the Uneekor QED and ProTee VX are not portable, nor are systems that run sensors underneath the floor. On the other hand, freestanding units like the EYE MINI or SkyTrak MAX can be easily moved around as needed.

If you travel and want to be able to take your simulator with you, your best bet is a freestanding launch monitor, net and mat. Nets can be stored in duffle bags and mats can be rolled up.

3. Tracking

OptiShot Swing Pad

Consider the tracking system that measures your ball and club data. Is it stereoscopic, photometric, quadrascopic, radar-based, infrared, etc.?

Tracking systems have their own advantages and disadvantages. Some have better accuracy, better reliability, and less lag between the ball hitting the screen and the ball flight displaying.

For example, while the Mevo Gen2 is very good, its sensor is never going to be as accurate or consistent as top-end systems like the GCQuad.

The SkyTrak and Mevo+ are excellent mid-tier systems, but many people don’t like the shot delay of the SkyTrak which can be up to a few seconds long. The SkyTrak+ improves on this delay but it’s still noticeable.

It’s also worth mentioning two of the main types of tracking systems: photometric and radar. In general, radar tracking is more reliable outdoors but requires more space around (behind) the golfer, while photometric (camera-based) tracking really shines indoors.

Generally, the more expensive the simulator, the better the tracking system. Look into the performance of each and decide how you weigh the importance of entertainment vs. game improvement.

4. Software

E6 CONNECT Logo

Consider what kinds of things you want to do, games you want to play, and activities you want to take part in on your golf simulator. There are many golf simulator software solutions out there.

Different simulator systems will support different software, but many golf simulators offer their own in-house software.

For example, SkyTrak software comes in a Basic Plan, which gives you a practice driving range, an Essential Plan, which gives you minigames, numeric display, and many other advanced features, and Core and Elite Plans which give you even more features including Course Play.

The Golf Club 2019 has 4K resolution support and offers a ton of golf courses, live tours and tournaments, as well as a tool that allows you to build your own golf course.

Uneekor offers its own in-house software in three tiers: View, Refine and Refine+ (formerly Succeed). This software has a 3D driving range, various practice modes, course modes, game modes, and more.

GSPro is a highly realistic software with advanced ball physics and 4K graphics. It offers powerful community features including a course builder and the ability to participate in online virtual tours.

Other software possibilities include FSX 2020, FSX Play, Creative Golf, GameDay, and Awesome Golf.

What software features do you see yourself using most often? Do you just want to practice on the range, play world-class courses, or both? Do you want a more serious experience, or a fun, entertaining, kid-friendly experience?

Consider what software options are available when looking at simulators, and make your decisions accordingly.

5. Budget

Money bag

This may be the last entry in the buying guide, but it’s one of the most important.

Not everyone can afford golf simulator packages that cost, say, $12,000+, and fortunately, there are options that cost well below this amount. Smaller, more compact setups tend to be inherently less expensive.

With that said, it’s important to realize that the less you spend, the less you’ll usually get, both in terms of hardware and software.

In this guide, we’ve tried to include quality golf simulators over a wide range of budgets that golfers might have. But the great thing is that you don’t have to drop the full cost of a simulator at once.

Our recommended golf simulator source here provides easy financing options that allow you to pay for your golf simulator over the course of a year or longer. Don’t forget about this option.

Conclusion

Golf simulators have become a lot more accessible and affordable over the past decade. Consequently, more golfers than ever before have been able to own their own setup even if they only have a small space available to them.

Unless we’re talking about a tiny shoebox with a 7-foot ceiling height, with a little bit of research, you’ll be able to find a great simulator no matter how tight your space constraints are. A quality, reliable golf simulator can be a huge boon to your golf toolkit.

Each of the simulator options reviewed above offer excellent value for the cost. We’ve given you the information you need to make a decision; now it’s up to you to go the rest of the way.

While it’s likely that no golf simulator setup will tick every one of your boxes, some will come pretty close to doing so.
