PING G440 LST Driver - 3 Perspectives

In this review, I’ll be taking a comprehensive look at the PING G440 LST driver.

The G440 LST is geared towards faster swingers who want to keep their spin down to maximize distance off the tee. A hotter face, lighter configuration, and longer 46″ shaft helps foster more clubhead speed than the previous generation while preserving forgiveness.

How does the G440 LST driver actually perform when put to the test? How does it compare to the G430 LST? Who is it best suited for? Is it worth putting in the bag?

Here’s what will be covered in the review:

Note: Unless otherwise stated, stock shafts and stock grips are used when evaluating this club. In most cases, the golf clubs reviewed on Golfstead are acquired temporarily for testing purposes and are not purchased. The review that follows is based on the personal experience and research of the author. Because everyone’s swing and body are different, results with a particular club may differ from person to person.

What are the reviews like?

The PING G440 LST driver won a gold medal on the Golf Digest 2025 Hot List. It enjoys a 5/5 customer rating on the PING website, a 5/5 (100% recommended) rating on Golf Galaxy, and has also been rated highly by critics.

What People Like

  • forgiving for a low-spin driver
  • surprisingly easy to swing
  • better feel than the G430 LST
  • exceptional performance low on the face

What People Don’t Like

  • performance gains over the G430 LST are marginal

The Features

The key technologies of the G440 LST are more or less the same as the G440 MAX:

  • Free Hosel: weight is removed from a section of the hosel and reallocated to lower the CG to record levels — the result is more distance and forgiveness.
  • Carbonfly Wrap Crown: this saves discretionary weight which is reallocated to lower the CG, leading to forgiveness and a more muted, pleasant impact sound.
  • Low Face: the height of the G440 LST’s face is lower than previous models, which enables it to be thinner and hotter for higher ball speeds across the face.
  • Tungsten Backweight: a 29-gram backweight can be moved into neutral, draw or fade positions for ball flight adjustability.
  • Trajectory Tuning 2.0 Hosel: this lightweight, aerodynamic, adjustable hosel offers eight loft and lie combinations to fine-tune your trajectory.

The key things that set the LST apart are a more compact, traditional head shape and internal weighting that promotes lower spin with a more penetrating trajectory.

The Performance

In the sections that follow, I’ll talk about my experience with the G440 LST driver. Let’s jump right in.

Distance

During my test, I didn’t see a significant increase in ball speeds compared to the G430 LST. At best, the gains were about 1 mph.

Having said this, given the fact that most golfers who would play the G440 LST have high swing speeds, this seemingly very small advantage can translate into a decent distance gain of maybe 5-10 yards.

In addition, the longer 46″ shaft will help some players squeeze out more clubhead speed, which will naturally translate into more ball speed and distance.

Forgiveness

The overall forgiveness picture is very much similar to the G430 LST, with one exception: low on the face.

During my field test, I found low face impacts to perform better overall, with around 25% better ball speed retention and 20% tighter dispersions. This will make a big difference for many tour players.

In an absolute sense, the G440 LST’s forgiveness is especially good for an LS driver and is even comparable to many game-improvement drivers.

Playability/Trajectory

The launch profile is, again, similar to the G430 LST, but I did experience a higher spin of around 200 RPMs on average during my test.

Given that the G-Series LST drivers already tend to lean towards the forgiving side of “low spin”, I would have liked to see less spin. Spin rates are still lower than the MAX and SFT models, but in my opinion, it doesn’t go far enough.

Workability is just as good as it is with the G430 LST. Capable golfers should have no issue shaping the ball off the tee.

A moveable sole weight can be used to alter ball flight. Putting the weight in the heel, toe and middle positions will result in draw, fade and neutral biases, respectively. Combined with an adjustable hosel, there’s ample room to dial in what works for you.

The Look

The G440 LST driver looks very similar (nearly identical, in fact) to the G440 MAX in terms of design and aesthetic. In fact, if it weren’t for the “LST” label and the fact that the LST is a bit more compact and pear-shaped at 450cc as opposed to 460cc, you’d have a very hard time telling the two models apart.

I would have liked to see more visual differentiation with the G440 LST, but I guess it’s not surprising given that the internal tech is the same.

Like the G440 MAX, the G440 LST boasts a Carbonfly Wrap and Crown Turbulators, the latter of which help to focus the ball at address. The driver sports blue accents instead of the yellow of the G430, with the sole design being more streamlined overall.

The Sound & Feel

When I reviewed the G430 LST, I noted the lower-toned, muted quality of the impact sound. That is largely retained here, but interestingly, I found the sound of the G440 LST to be a little bit sharper and more lively. It’s not bad, but it’s just a bit different.

Feel is stable, powerful, and responsive. The feel experience when you make center contact at high speeds is phenomenal.

While there’s enough feedback in the strike to discern where you make contact on the face, it’s not substantially better in this regard compared to the MAX model.

Feel on mis-hits is noticeably less powerful through the hands, but the sound doesn’t change all that much across the face. I imagine that some pro golfers might want more precise feedback.

Where To Buy This Driver Online

Online availability of PING golf clubs is more limited than other manufacturers.

One of the best places to customize and order a G440 LST driver is Golf Galaxy. They are one of the largest golf retailers in the world, offering a club trade-in program, a 90-day Play Guarantee, and other benefits.

You can also check the stock at Global Golf and PGA TOUR Superstore. These merchants may offer club trade-ins, points programs, or other perks to enhance your shopping experience.

Another place to check out the G440 LST driver (new or used) is eBay. You can typically find deals here that you can’t find anywhere else.

Final Thoughts

In its own right, the PING G440 LST is an excellent driver. As a low-spin driver, it’s not my favourite as I find the spin to be a little too high, but that’s just my personal experience.

The relatively high amounts of forgiveness and spin make the G440 LST a good option for players who want to take advantage of a higher swing speed but still want to keep the ball in play off the tee.

Of course, low handicappers, scratch golfers and pros will tend to gravitate towards the G440 LST due to the reduced spin, but its added forgiveness can make it viable for some higher handicappers as well.
